a letter to my son

Last night, we had a baby shower celebrating your impending arrival to the world.

So many of your family members wished that you knew Jesus loved you and that you got mommy's laugh and daddy's eyes. It really made me think about what I want for you.

I want you to be brave. I want you to be unafraid to always stand up for what's right. I hope you always fight for the underdog. I hope you're never afraid to be honest with me and daddy. Even when you're in trouble and at your worst, I hope you know daddy and I are safe and you can always reach out to us for help.

You don't have to change the world, but I hope you're never afraid to do it if you need to. Do better, be better. I've spent the last few months of my pregnancy terrified of what's happening to my world. I'm scared about the world you're going to grow up in.

I hope you learn compassion and empathy. I hope you're never afraid to be vulnerable. I hope the world doesn't make you angry and mean. I hope you know empathy without having to have something bad happen to you.

Little Lincoln, be brave. Be strong. Pursue your hopes and dreams. Fight for what's right. We'll always be proud of you. Always give everything your best shot.
